Currently, when carrying out indoor waterproofing, emphasis is placed on selecting appropriate waterproofing materials; however, roofs must also be waterproofed. In particular, the top-floor roof must be properly waterproofed to prevent indoor leaks. Many people choose oil-absorbing felt for roof waterproofing. So, let’s now take a closer look at the precautions for using oil-absorbing felt.

Currently, when performing indoor waterproofing, people tend to place great emphasis on selecting the right waterproofing materials—but rooftop waterproofing is equally important. Especially for top-floor units, proper rooftop waterproofing is essential to prevent indoor leaks. Many people choose oil-absorbing felt for rooftop waterproofing. Precautions for using oil-absorbing felt:

The shelf life of typical oil-absorbing felt is five years. This means that an ordinary waterproof layer can last at least five years without deteriorating. High-quality waterproof materials are thicker and have a shelf life of around ten years; their price tends to be higher accordingly. Generally, the cost of roofing waterproofing is calculated based on the material used and its expected service life.

There are many varieties and specifications of oil-absorbing felt. When using it, select the appropriate specification and number of layers based on the specific requirements of the application. For multi-layer applications, lightly brush the fabric surface of the oil-absorbing felt to prevent it from becoming too thick and sticking together. Then, apply an asphalt binder about 1 mm thick, and with slight pressure, the felt will adhere firmly.

  1. Due to the differences in physical properties between petroleum asphalt and coal tar asphalt, caution should be exercised when using them as binders. Oil-absorbing felts use petroleum asphalt as the binder, while coal tar asphalt felts use coal tar asphalt as the binder; otherwise, the quality may be affected.

  2. For the binder used in oil-absorbing felt, petroleum asphalt is suitable; the mixing temperature should be between 230 and 270°C. When applying with brushes or edging, it’s more appropriate to lower the mixing temperature to between 160 and 180°C.

  3. For the binder used in bonding coal tar pitch felts, after mixing hard coal tar at 75% and coal tar at 25%, the firing temperature should be maintained between 190 and 210°C. When applying the binder by coating or edging, if the mixing temperature is reduced to below 150°C and the binder is applied at the temperature achieved during mixing, the felt may easily get damaged or bubble.

  4. The oil-absorbing felt should be the same as the felt used at the joints and must extend at least 5 centimeters beyond the edges. For critical projects—such as scaffolding and underground waterproofing—add an extra 15 centimeters to the edge. Be sure to apply sufficient pressure to prevent air bubbles from forming inside.

When selecting oil-absorbing felt, it’s still recommended to choose brands manufactured by reputable producers. In daily life, you should also make proper preparations for the installation process and pay close attention to ensuring high-quality workmanship.
